Digital Railroad Inc. was a venture-backed company that provided a web services platform and marketplace for professional photographers and photo agencies. Founded in 2003 and launched in 2004 by Evan Nisselson, a former professional photographer and serial entrepreneur, the company aimed to empower photographers to manage, market, and sell their images online. Nisselson, who had a background as a photo editor at Excite@Home and developed a consumer photo channel for Telecom Italia, served as the CEO and later Chairman.
The platform allowed approximately 3,000 photographers and 80 photo agencies across 80 countries to upload and deliver high-resolution images to a marketplace of around 30,000 photo buyers from major publications. Before the widespread adoption of cloud computing, Digital Railroad handled a significant data volume, processing 10,000 to 20,000 large image files daily. The business model was based on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) structure, generating recurring revenue which peaked at an estimated $3 million annually.
Despite attracting a loyal customer base and investment from venture capital firms like Venrock and Morgenthaler Ventures, Digital Railroad faced financial difficulties. In October 2008, after efforts to secure additional financing or a strategic partner failed, the company abruptly ceased all operations. The shutdown was sudden, giving customers a very short window to download their photo archives before the site went offline completely, which led to significant customer backlash. The company was ultimately forced to close due to a lack of sustainable long-term financial support amid the 2008 economic crisis.
