Devex, a Brazilian software company, established a significant presence in the South American mining sector by developing automation solutions for mining operations. Founded by Guilherme Bastos, the company specialized in mine-management software for both open-pit and underground mines. Its product suite expanded from its flagship offering, SmartMine®, into a comprehensive automation platform. This platform provides real-time control and remote monitoring of all mine activities within a single 3D environment, designed to optimize performance. The system is built on an open platform, which allows for easier application development for mobile environments and integration with other common systems.
In a strategic move to bolster its position in the mining industry and expand its footprint in South America, Hexagon AB signed an agreement to acquire Devex on October 7, 2013. At the time of the acquisition, Devex was noted for its considerable growth and a leading market share in Brazil. The transaction was seen as a way to cross-sell complementary technologies from Hexagon's other businesses, such as Leica Geosystems Mining, and to better serve the automation needs of the mining industry. Following the acquisition, Devex was integrated into Hexagon's Mining division, which provides a broad range of technologies for mine planning, operations, and safety. Guilherme Bastos continued to lead the Devex business post-acquisition.
Hexagon's Mining division leverages the technologies from its acquisitions to offer an interconnected ecosystem for the entire mining value chain. This includes solutions for evaluation and planning, drill and blast operations, load and haul management, mine surveying, and processing. The division is part of Hexagon AB, a global company founded in 1975 and headquartered in Sweden, which provides design, measurement, and visualization technologies across various industries. The acquisition of Devex was a key part of Hexagon's strategy to enhance its automation technology offerings to help clients increase efficiency and reduce operational costs.
