DeRemate.com was a pioneering e-commerce and online auction company established in 1999 by co-founders including Alec Oxenford, Jose Marin, and Guido Grinbaum. Headquartered in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the company quickly expanded its operations across 10 Latin American countries and the United States, becoming a significant player in the region's emerging digital marketplace. The platform enabled consumer-to-consumer trading through both interactive auctions and fixed-price sales, offering a wide array of products such as electronics, collectibles, vehicles, and real estate. DeRemate also operated its own payment platform, DePagos.com, to facilitate online transactions.
The company's business model focused on providing a platform for users to buy and sell goods and services, competing directly with MercadoLibre, which was also founded in 1999. In a key strategic move in February 2000, Terra Networks, part of the Telefónica group, acquired a 30% stake in DeRemate.com. The company's growth was substantial, and by 2007, its operations in Argentina and Chile alone generated approximately $95 million in gross merchandise volume. This success ultimately led to its acquisition by its main competitor, MercadoLibre. The acquisition occurred in stages, with MercadoLibre first purchasing operations in eight countries including Brazil and Mexico in November 2005. Subsequently, in August 2008, MercadoLibre acquired the remaining and most significant operations in Argentina and Chile for $40 million, a deal financed with $22 million in cash and an $18 million promissory note. This final acquisition solidified MercadoLibre's leadership position in the Latin American e-commerce market.
