Demand Energy Networks, Inc. operated as a specialized provider of energy storage systems and intelligent software for the renewable and environmental sector. Founded in 2008 by Dave Curry and headquartered in Liberty Lake, Washington, the company focused on delivering solutions for behind-the-meter energy storage. Initially targeting utilities, the company pivoted to serve the utilities' customers, such as large commercial and industrial clients, including high-rise office buildings in New York City. This strategy allowed clients to store electricity during off-peak hours at lower rates for later use.

The company's core product was the Distributed Energy Network Optimization System (DEN.OS™), an intelligent, cloud-based software platform. This system enabled real-time optimization of energy management by integrating energy storage, distributed generation, and renewables. The DEN.OS platform provided the necessary analytics and controls to manage energy across multiple facilities, effectively creating a virtual power plant to maximize economic returns and operational efficiency. A key application of this technology was in the development of microgrids, such as the one for the Marcus Garvey Village Apartments in Brooklyn, which integrated solar power and fuel cells with battery storage. Before its acquisition, Demand Energy had completed 24 projects totaling 3 MW/9 MWh of installed capacity in the U.S. and Latin America, with a substantial project pipeline.

A significant milestone in the company's history was its 100% acquisition by the Italian multinational energy company Enel, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power North America (EGPNA), in January 2017. At the time of the acquisition, Gregg Patterson served as the President and CEO. The deal provided Demand Energy with access to Enel's extensive global portfolio of renewable energy projects, aiming to scale its software and expand its market reach significantly. For Enel, the acquisition strengthened its position in the battery storage market and supported its strategy of enhancing digitization and operational efficiency.
