DeFi Land
A farming simulation game bringing key elements of DeFi together - built on Solana.
DeFi Land operates as a multi-chain agriculture-simulation web game designed to gamify decentralized finance (DeFi). The company was founded in 2021 and is headquartered in Taiwan. A significant milestone was achieved in June 2021 when the project won an award in the Solana Hackathon. Subsequently, in September 2021, the company secured $4.1 million in a Series A funding round from over 40 investors, including Animoca Brands, Alameda Research, and the Solana Foundation. The public beta of the game was launched in December 2021. The team lead, known as DFL Erwin, has a background in the tech startup industry, with previous ventures in augmented and virtual reality, gaming, and machine learning.
The business aims to simplify the complexities of DeFi for a mainstream audience by integrating financial activities into an interactive game. It operates on a free-to-play model, allowing users to start without an initial investment and progress to a Play-and-Earn tier. Revenue is generated through several streams, including fees from in-game transactions, sales of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), listing fees for new protocols, and in-game advertisements. The platform runs on top of established DeFi protocols on the Solana blockchain, such as Serum and Raydium, allowing users to perform swaps, provide liquidity, and engage in yield farming within the game's interface.
The core of DeFi Land is its gamified experience where financial actions are represented by farming activities. For instance, yield farming is depicted as planting and harvesting crops, while trading tokens is done at an in-game market. The game features a dual-token system: DFL is the governance token used for staking, voting, and trading NFTs, while GOLDY is the in-game currency earned through gameplay and used for microtransactions like upgrading and repairing NFTs. Players can own Gen-0 NFTs, which are essential to unlock the Play-and-Earn features. These NFTs, such as fishing rods, hunting guns, and harvesters, correspond to specific mini-games like fishing, shooting, and harvesting, each with its own mechanics and reward system. The game also includes idle game mechanics through pets that can be sent on adventures to earn passive rewards. Separate leaderboards for free-to-play and play-to-earn players aim to ensure fair competition.
