Deadhaus Sonata is an upcoming free-to-play, narrative-driven action RPG developed by Apocalypse Studios. The game is positioned as a spiritual successor to Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and combines elements from Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem and Too Human. It features cooperative play for up to six players, fast-paced combat, and procedurally generated levels for high re-playability. Players control one of several undead classes—such as Vampires, Liches, Ghouls, and Revenants—each with unique skills, fighting against the living in the gothic, Lovecraftian world of Nogosaua.
The project is led by Denis Dyack, a veteran of the gaming industry who founded Apocalypse Studios in 2018. Dyack was previously the founder of Silicon Knights, where he created critically acclaimed titles like Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. His background includes a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, and he was inducted into the Canadian Developers Hall of Fame in 2011. Apocalypse Studios was established as a 'cloud-first' company, leveraging technologies like AI and cloud computing to create innovative gaming experiences. The studio secured a seed funding round from Tyr Ventures in February 2022 to move the game into production.
Deadhaus Sonata is built on a free-to-play business model with what the studio calls "ethical monetization," focusing on cosmetic microtransactions and avoiding pay-to-win mechanics, similar to Path of Exile. A key feature is its planned integration with streaming platforms like Twitch, allowing viewers to interact with and influence the game in real-time, effectively acting as a dungeon master or participating in world-changing political elections. The game also plans to incorporate community-driven content, providing tools for players to create and monetize their own levels, quests, and characters.
