DataMarket was an Icelandic company founded in Reykjavík in 2008 by serial entrepreneur Hjálmar Gíslason. Gíslason, with a background in founding startups in gaming, mobile, and web search, envisioned a global exchange for structured data. The company specialized in providing access to and visualizing data from a wide range of public and private institutions.
Initially, the platform aggregated data from Icelandic public bodies like Statistics Iceland and the Central Bank of Iceland. It soon expanded to include major international sources such as Eurostat, The World Bank, and the United Nations Statistics Division. The service allowed users to find, compare, and visualize complex datasets, bringing disparate information together into a single, searchable format. For instance, a sales manager could blend their internal sales data with external population figures to analyze market penetration or use weather data to understand its impact on retail performance. This capability catered to professionals and enterprises needing a comprehensive view of their business environment for planning and decision-making.
DataMarket operated on a multifaceted business model. It offered free access for anyone to search and visualize public data, upload their own datasets, and purchase premium content. For enterprise clients and data publishers, the company provided its platform as a white-label Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution, which included a Data Delivery Engine for organizations to publish their own data with powerful search and visualization tools. This allowed information companies to deliver data more efficiently to their own customers. After a successful period of growth, including winning multiple Icelandic Web Awards in 2011, DataMarket was acquired by the business intelligence and visual analytics company Qlik in October 2014 for $13.5 million. Following the acquisition, the platform was integrated into Qlik's offerings as Qlik DataMarket, a Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) product. However, Qlik later retired the DataMarket service on June 30, 2021, citing evolving customer data requirements.
