In 1980, long before the dot-com boom, Nico Nierenberg, William Osberg, and David Edwards co-founded a company called Unify Corporation. Their focus was on database management systems and development tools, initially for the Unix platform. As the market shifted, Unify adapted, creating cross-platform tools to support the growing dominance of Windows. The company's journey was not a straight line. It saw leadership changes, including the departure of two founders in 1993, and even a delisting from Nasdaq. The turn of the millennium brought a series of strategic shifts. In 2010, Unify made a key move by acquiring Daegis, an eDiscovery solution provider. This acquisition proved so pivotal that in 2011, Unify rebranded itself, taking the Daegis name and signaling a new focus on information governance. The final chapter for Daegis as an independent entity came in November 2015. Enterprise information management giant OpenText announced it was acquiring Daegis for approximately $13.5 million. The acquisition was part of OpenText's strategy to bolster its own information governance capabilities, integrating Daegis's software for archiving, eDiscovery, and data migration into its portfolio. Daegis shares ceased trading, and the company became an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of OpenText, marking the end of a 35-year journey from a Unix database developer to a key player in information governance.
