CUBi Energia provides an energy management platform that leverages Internet of Things (IoT) and data science to help companies optimize electricity consumption and reduce costs. The company primarily serves large electricity consumers, including industrial, commercial, and public utility clients in Brazil. CUBi's business model is centered on its technology platform, which automates energy bill management and provides real-time monitoring of energy use, thereby identifying savings opportunities. It generates revenue through its specialized services and platform access.
The inspiration for CUBi originated during the founders' master's program at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, USA. Co-founders Rafael Turella, Ricardo Dias, Bruno Scarpin, and Tiago Justino were contracted to conduct an energy audit for a university building. After analyzing four years of collected data, their recommendations resulted in an 11% reduction in energy costs, saving the institution approximately $1 million annually. This success prompted them to apply their knowledge to the Brazilian market, where they identified similar opportunities for reducing excessive energy consumption. The startup was officially founded in São Paulo in 2017.
The founders' academic backgrounds are deeply rooted in engineering and sustainable systems. Rafael Turella is an Environmental Engineer from UNESP, Ricardo Dias is an Environmental and Urban Engineer from UFABC, and Bruno Scarpin is a Mechatronic Engineer from USP; all three hold master's degrees from the Rochester Institute of Technology. This collective expertise forms the technical foundation of the company. Before CUBi, Ricardo Dias, the current CEO, gained experience at Braskem in the sustainable development team. The founders' shared passion for efficiency and data science drives the company's mission to advance the energy efficiency market in Brazil.
CUBi's core offering is an intelligent and intuitive energy management system. It employs proprietary IoT hardware to connect to industrial equipment, enabling real-time data collection and eliminating manual data entry. The platform automatically captures and processes energy bills from any distributor in Brazil, standardizing the data for analysis. Through its online dashboard, clients can monitor energy consumption, identify cost-saving opportunities related to issues like demand charges, tariff classification, and power factor penalties, and receive automated diagnoses and improvement suggestions. For companies navigating the complexities of Brazil's Free Energy Market (Mercado Livre de Energia), CUBi's platform offers tools and expert guidance to facilitate cost-effective energy procurement. The company has received multiple accolades, including being named the top EnergyTech in Brazil for consecutive years by the 100 Open Startups ranking. In 2021, CUBi secured a R$1.5 million seed investment from firms including Bossanova Investimentos and UniAngels to fuel its expansion.
