Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is a non-profit institution located in Bentonville, Arkansas, that integrates American art with the natural landscape of the Ozarks. Founded in 2005 by philanthropist Alice Walton, daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, the museum opened to the public on November 11, 2011. Walton's vision was to create a major art destination in the heart of the country, making art accessible to a wider audience. Her personal interest in art, which began with watercolors in her childhood, evolved into a substantial collection that formed the basis of the museum's holdings. The Walton Family Foundation has been a primary financial driver, contributing over a billion dollars, including an $800 million endowment for operations, acquisitions, and capital improvements, which allows for free public admission.
The museum's campus, set on 120 acres of forest, was designed by architect Moshe Safdie and features a series of pavilions and bridge-like structures nestled around two spring-fed ponds. The design prioritizes the connection between art, architecture, and nature. The facility includes gallery spaces, a library with over 50,000 volumes, meeting spaces, a restaurant named Eleven, and miles of outdoor trails with sculptures. A significant addition is the Bachman-Wilson House, a Usonian home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which was relocated from New Jersey and reconstructed on the museum grounds in 2015.
The permanent collection spans five centuries of American art, from the Colonial era to the present day. It features prominent works such as portraits of George Washington by Charles Willson Peale and Gilbert Stuart, Asher B. Durand's "Kindred Spirits," and Norman Rockwell's "Rosie the Riveter." The museum is committed to showcasing a diverse and inclusive story of American art, actively acquiring works by underrepresented artists. In 2020, Crystal Bridges expanded its footprint by opening a satellite contemporary art space called The Momentary in a former cheese factory. Furthering its mission, Walton established the Art Bridges Foundation in 2017 to share American art with institutions nationwide. The campus is also expanding to include the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine and the Heartland Whole Health Institute, reflecting Walton's interest in the connection between art, nature, and wellness.
