CRS Retail Systems, founded in 1952, established itself as a provider of comprehensive retail management solutions encompassing software, hardware, and associated services. The firm was strategically focused on enabling its clients to boost sales, enhance customer service, and lower operational expenditures. The company's headquarters was located in Newburgh, New York, with additional offices in Seattle and Salt Lake City.
The company's product suite was designed for the specialty retail market. Key offerings included RetailStore, a point-of-sale (POS) and back-office management system, and MobileStore, which provided capabilities for inventory management and item lookup on mobile devices. Further solutions included ReturnsManagement, LossPrevention, and RetailCRM for analyzing customer purchasing habits. CRS catered to a high-profile client base, including prominent brands such as American Eagle Outfitters, Ann Taylor, Barnes & Noble, Foot Locker, and J. Crew.
In a significant milestone, CRS Retail Systems was acquired by private equity firm Accel-KKR in 2002. This led to a subsequent and final acquisition in December 2005, when Epicor Software Corporation purchased CRS for approximately $121 million in an all-cash transaction. At the time of the acquisition, CRS had over 100,000 systems installed across 32 countries and employed more than 350 people. The acquisition aimed to extend Epicor's enterprise solution offerings into the retail sector.
