Crowdmix was a London-based social music startup founded in 2013 by Ian Roberts and Gareth Ingham. Roberts, the CEO, came from an IT background, having previously run a company that sold Wi-Fi access to stadiums. The company aimed to create a social platform where music fans could connect, share, and discover music, bridging the gap between fans and artists.
The platform's core concept was to allow users to form 'crowds' or communities based on their musical tastes to chat, share tracks, and influence popularity charts. It planned to integrate with existing streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, allowing users to play music directly within the app. The intended business model was to generate revenue through custom-branded campaigns within the app, rather than traditional advertising, although it never reached a stage where it generated revenue. The startup attracted significant attention, raising approximately £14-18 million from investors, including prominent figures from the City of London and property tycoon Nick Candy.
Despite the substantial funding and a large staff of over 160 employees across London and Los Angeles, Crowdmix never launched a public version of its app, releasing only an invite-only beta in May 2016. The company's operations were characterized by a high burn rate, with monthly expenditures reportedly reaching up to £2 million on lavish offices, high salaries, and parties. Internal issues included a high staff turnover, frequent clashes between the co-founders, and a lack of a clear product-market fit. In June 2016, CEO Ian Roberts was ousted, and by July 2016, the company entered administration after failing to secure further emergency funding and failing to pay staff and vendors. The company's assets were subsequently acquired by its main investor, Nick Candy.
