In 2006, while still a medical student, Furqan Alamgir, alongside co-founders Alex Yeung and Ka Yiu Yeung, established Connexin in the UK. The company was founded with a mission to bridge the gap between the digital and real worlds by providing smart technologies and digital services. Their focus from the start was on improving lives and communities by enhancing connectivity. The company initially focused on providing wireless internet, phone, and cloud services. A pivotal moment in Connexin's journey was its expansion into building and operating smart city infrastructure to support the Internet of Things (IoT). This strategic shift allowed them to partner with utility providers to deploy smart networks, transforming city sustainability and connectivity. A significant milestone occurred in September 2020 when Connexin secured a major Series B funding round of $104 million, led by Whitehelm Capital. This capital injection was crucial for accelerating their growth and the build-out of their independent full-fibre network. Over its history, the company has raised a total of $118 million across seven funding rounds. The company's trajectory took another significant turn in March 2025, when it was acquired by CityFibre, a key player in the UK's telecommunications infrastructure space. This acquisition positioned Connexin as an operating subsidiary, integrating its innovative smart city and IoT solutions into a larger network, marking a new chapter in its mission to enhance digital infrastructure.
