In 1997, the idea of a 'smart grid' was still in its infancy. Yet, a team of founders including Robert M. Chiste, had a vision. They saw an opportunity in managing energy consumption, not just production. This led to the formation of Comverge, a company built on the concept of demand response. The business was straightforward: partner with utilities to help consumers reduce electricity usage during peak hours. In exchange for incentives, customers would allow Comverge to remotely cycle their air conditioners and other high-load appliances off and on for short periods, preventing blackouts and reducing the need for expensive 'peaker' power plants. This simple, yet powerful, idea gained traction. Comverge developed the hardware and software to create a virtual power plant, an aggregation of controllable loads that could be dispatched on demand. This positioned them as a key player in the evolving energy landscape. The company's growth culminated in a significant milestone in April 2007, when Comverge went public on the NASDAQ. The IPO provided the capital to expand its services and technology, further embedding itself with major utility partners across the country. The next chapter in Comverge's journey was its acquisition. In 2012, private equity firm H.I.G. Capital acquired Comverge, taking the company private. This move was intended to provide the flexibility to navigate a changing market without the pressures of public reporting. Later, in 2017, the story came full circle when Itron, a major player in utility and energy management technology, acquired the commercial and industrial business of Comverge from H.I.G. Capital. This event integrated Comverge's demand response capabilities into a broader portfolio of smart grid and smart city solutions, cementing its legacy in energy management.
