Compricer AB operates as Sweden's largest digital comparison platform for personal finance services. The company was established in 2004 by Jakob Tolleryd and Marc Lickfett, who identified a gap in the market for comprehensive comparison tools for essential household expenses. Tolleryd, a serial internet entrepreneur with a background from the Stockholm School of Economics, was inspired by the success of product comparison sites like Pricerunner and saw a greater potential in helping consumers save significant amounts on recurring financial commitments such as loans, insurance, and utilities.
The core of Compricer's business is a free-to-use website that allows individual consumers to compare rates and terms for a wide array of personal finance products. The platform aggregates offerings from over 350 companies, encompassing established market leaders and newer entrants. Its service portfolio includes comparisons for mortgages, private loans, insurance policies (such as car insurance), electricity contracts, and savings accounts. The business model is commission-based; Compricer earns a fee from the service provider when a consumer switches or purchases a product through the platform, ensuring the service remains free for the end-user. In its early days, the company supplemented its online platform with a call center to improve conversion rates, a hybrid approach that proved effective.
A significant milestone in Compricer's history was its acquisition by the Norwegian media group Schibsted. The deal was initiated in 2013 and completed in stages, with Schibsted taking full ownership by 2016. This integration allowed Compricer to leverage Schibsted's extensive media network, including major online sites, to significantly expand its market reach. Following the successful sale and a decade at the helm, founder Jakob Tolleryd stepped down as CEO in 2016. By 2023, the company reported revenues of 142 million SEK. As of late 2024, as part of a broader corporate simplification strategy, Schibsted announced its intention to divest the Lendo Group, which includes Compricer.
