Collegefeed operated as a career marketplace with a specific focus on connecting college students and recent graduates with potential employers. The company was founded in 2013 by Sanjeev Agrawal and Aman Khanna. The founders' backgrounds were instrumental to the company's creation; Agrawal, a former Google product marketing chief and MIT graduate, drew from his own early career challenges, while Khanna brought experience from Microsoft and a graduate degree from Stanford. Their shared vision was to rectify what they saw as a broken and outdated process for entry-level recruitment, aiming to level the playing field for students from all universities, not just the top-tier institutions.
The business model centered on a freemium approach for its primary users, the students. Job seekers could create a profile on the online platform, which then acted as a personal career assistant, matching them to job and internship opportunities. Revenue was generated from employers, who paid a fee for platform access, branding opportunities, and agency services for successful hires made through the platform. Collegefeed served a dual-sided market: students seeking their first professional roles and companies, from startups to large corporations, aiming to recruit millennial talent. By 2014, the platform had attracted over 1,000 companies and tens of thousands of students from more than 400 schools.
The service provided a social network-style platform where students could not only find job listings but also access interview help, connect with alumni, and interact with companies in a more progressive manner than traditional career fairs. A feature called "Idea Swag" allowed companies to post challenges, awarding prizes and creating another engagement channel with potential candidates. The company secured approximately $2.5 million in funding from investors including Accel Partners and S-Cubed Capital to expand its team and employer network. A significant milestone in the company's trajectory was its acquisition by AfterCollege in April 2015 for an undisclosed amount. The merger was positioned as the creation of the largest career hub for college students, combining AfterCollege's large user base with Collegefeed's platform tools. Following the acquisition, Collegefeed's student profiles were integrated into the AfterCollege network, and Agrawal joined the AfterCollege advisory board.
