ColdLight Solutions, LLC developed a cloud-based predictive analytics platform named Neuron. Founded in 2005 by Ryan Caplan and Eric Smith, and based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, the company specialized in using artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze large datasets. Caplan, the CEO, previously served as COO for Electronic Ink and led a product development team at Fidelity National Financial.
The company's core product, Neuron, was an AI-driven engine designed to automate data discovery, build validated predictive models, and deliver actionable recommendations without requiring programming. It served various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, media, retail, and financial services. For instance, in healthcare, the technology was used to identify patients at high risk of readmission by analyzing patient data, diagnoses, and prescriptions. In retail, it helped companies understand and influence consumer behavior at the point of decision. The platform could be deployed on-premise, in a hosted virtual private cloud, or in a private cloud environment.
ColdLight received early-stage funding from Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern PA in 2010. By 2013, the company had raised $10 million from investors, including Intel Capital and Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors. On May 7, 2015, PTC (formerly Parametric Technology Corporation) acquired ColdLight Solutions for approximately $105 million. The acquisition was part of PTC's strategy to strengthen its position in the Internet of Things (IoT) market. ColdLight's Neuron platform was integrated with PTC's ThingWorx IoT platform to automate the analysis of data from connected devices, enabling capabilities like predictive maintenance and system monitoring. Following the acquisition, Neuron was transitioned into what is now known as ThingWorx Analytics.
