Clickpass was a federated identity management platform founded in 2007 by Immad Akhund and Peter James Nixey. The company originated in the UK before relocating to Boston to participate in the Y-Combinator accelerator program in the summer of 2007, eventually settling in San Francisco. As an early player in the identity space, Clickpass focused on simplifying the user experience by providing an OpenID provider and authentication gateway.
The platform's core service was a single-sign-on (SSO) solution that allowed users to access multiple websites with a single set of credentials. It was designed to remove the complexity of OpenID for end-users, presenting consistent interfaces and eliminating the need for separate passwords across different web applications. This enabled individuals to use one primary account, such as Google, Yahoo, or Facebook, to log into various partner sites, streamlining the authentication process. The business catered to both individual users seeking convenience and corporate clients needing digital identity management solutions. Clickpass secured approximately $337,000 in funding from investors including Y Combinator and Lowercase Capital.
In December 2008, Clickpass was acquired by SynthaSite (which later became Yola), a do-it-yourself website builder. The acquisition was intended to integrate Clickpass's identity platform to create a seamless experience for SynthaSite's users across its network of partner sites and services. Following this, Clickpass was later acquired by Janrain on November 1, 2012. Janrain, a specialist in customer identity and access management (CIAM), was itself subsequently acquired by Akamai Technologies in January 2019, integrating its identity cloud services into Akamai's broader security offerings.
