Citadel Plastics Holdings, Inc. operated as a materials company specializing in the formulation and production of thermoset and thermoplastic compounds. Established in 2007, the company was formed through a private equity-backed consolidation strategy, beginning with the acquisition of Matrixx Group and expanding through a series of further acquisitions. This strategy included the notable purchases of Lucent Polymers in 2013 and The Composites Group in 2014, which significantly broadened its technical capabilities and product offerings.
The company's business model focused on providing highly engineered, custom material solutions for a diverse base of blue-chip clients. It served a wide array of industries, including transportation, automotive, industrial, construction, consumer goods, healthcare, and energy. Citadel's product portfolio encompassed a broad range of proprietary compounds, such as thermoplastics and engineered composites, processed via injection molding and extrusion. These materials were utilized in applications like high-performance automotive structural components, electrical power distribution, and medical patient transport systems. Revenue was generated through the sale of these custom-formulated plastic materials and compounds to its industrial and commercial clients. Before its acquisition, the company had grown to operate 21 manufacturing facilities worldwide and employed 1,200 people.
A key figure in the company's lineage is plastics veteran Ray Wright, who founded both Matrixx Group (in 1985) and its predecessor Complas Industries (in 1973), both of which eventually became part of the entity that acquired Citadel. The company's growth was driven by a strategy of acquiring businesses to build a comprehensive portfolio of material science technologies. This culminated in March 2015, when A. Schulman, Inc. acquired Citadel from private equity firms HGGC and Charlesbank Capital Partners for $800 million. Subsequently, in 2018, A. Schulman, including the former Citadel assets, was acquired by LyondellBasell and integrated into its Advanced Polymer Solutions division.
