Founded in 2011 by Gregarious Narain, Ranvir Gujral, and Gaurav Sharma, Chute established itself as a visual marketing platform centered on user-generated content (UGC). The company was a participant in Y Combinator's Winter 2012 batch. The founders brought together diverse experiences; Gregarious Narain, for instance, was the first employee and Vice President of Product at the social influence platform Klout, providing him with a substantial background in social and influencer marketing.
Chute's core business was providing a cloud-based platform for brands, agencies, and publishers to manage visual media. The platform enabled clients to discover and curate photos and videos created by their audience, using features like text search, geolocation, and visual recognition. Its services covered the entire lifecycle of user-generated media, from discovery and rights management to displaying the content across marketing channels and websites. The company catered to a high-profile clientele, including major brands such as adidas, Condé Nast, Ford, the NBA, and The New York Times.
The business model was based on providing these visual media solutions to brands to help them engage with their audiences and influencers. The platform included tools like Chute Insights and Chute Workspace for ideation, production, and amplification of visual content. In 2013, the company launched Chute Ads, a product designed to integrate real-time user-generated content into digital advertising units. Further expanding its capabilities, Chute introduced its IRIS image recognition technology in 2015, which could detect logos, objects, and scenes within images on social platforms like Instagram and Twitter. Over its lifetime, the company raised a total of $16.9 million in funding over several rounds.
In June 2018, Chute was acquired by the private equity firm ESW Capital and became part of its Ignite Technologies business. This move followed a trend of acquisitions in the user-generated marketing space, with competitors like Olapic being acquired by Monotype. Prior to the acquisition, co-founder Gregarious Narain had departed the company in 2017.
