ChipWrights operated as a fabless semiconductor company, focusing its efforts on the design of system-on-chip (SoC) solutions tailored for the embedded video and audio applications market. Founded in 2000 by John Redford and Cary Robins, the Waltham, Massachusetts-based firm sought to address the growing demand for advanced signal processing in digital imaging and video. The company's business model was centered on designing and marketing microchips while outsourcing the capital-intensive manufacturing processes, such as wafer processing and packaging, to third-party foundries.

The core of ChipWrights' product offering was its programmable visual signal processors (ViSPs), which integrated a RISC processor with a scalable array of digital signal processing (DSP) vector processing units. This architecture, termed "very dense instruction word" (VDIW), was engineered from the ground up to provide high performance at low power, specifically for image and video processing tasks. The design allowed for significant parallelism when operating on image data, making it suitable for a range of products including digital cameras, IP security cameras, personal media players, and IPTVs. For instance, its CW4511 chip was optimized for digital cameras, featuring interfaces for image sensors, LCDs, and video outputs, and could support sensors up to 12 megapixels.

Throughout its operation, ChipWrights raised a total of approximately $40.1 million in funding over several rounds from a variety of investors, including Band of Angels, Rock Maple Ventures, and Axiom Venture Partners. A significant milestone occurred in May 2005 when the company was acquired by AD Group, a UK-based specialist in CCTV and video over IP. Following the acquisition, John Redford continued as the Chief Technology Officer. The company is no longer active.
