ChangeTip was a San Francisco-based financial technology company that developed a micropayment platform enabling users to send small amounts of money, or "tips," over the internet and social media. Founded in 2013 by Nick Sullivan, the firm, legally known as ChangeCoin, aimed to create a "love button for the Internet," allowing content creators to monetize their work through direct appreciation from their audience, as an alternative to relying on advertising revenue. Sullivan, an experienced technology leader with a history of identifying and capitalizing on emerging digital trends, conceived the idea after recognizing the need for a service similar to Reddit's Bitcointip that could operate across the entire web.

The company's primary product, ChangeTip, allowed individuals and organizations to send and receive tips using Bitcoin and later, U.S. dollars. The service integrated with major social media platforms, including Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, and Google+, allowing a user to send a tip by simply mentioning "@changetip" in a comment or post. The platform operated on a centralized, off-chain ledger, meaning transactions were recorded on ChangeTip's internal servers and only pushed to the public Bitcoin blockchain when a user deposited or withdrew funds. This model facilitated instant, low-cost microtransactions. By November 2014, the service had gained significant traction, attracting over 100,000 users who had sent more than 350,000 tips. To support its growth, ChangeTip raised a total of $4.66 million in funding from investors including Pantera Capital, Idealab, and 500 Startups.

Despite its initial popularity and viral growth, ChangeTip faced challenges. In February 2016, to address privacy and centralization concerns from the community, the company launched ChangeTip Wallet, a decentralized version that gave users control over their own private keys. However, a few months later, in April 2016, the majority of ChangeTip's engineering team was acqui-hired by Airbnb. The deal was for talent only; Airbnb did not acquire ChangeTip's intellectual property or assets and stated it had no plans to integrate Bitcoin into its ecosystem. Following the departure of its core team, ChangeTip announced in November 2016 that it would be shutting down its services, citing the inability to find a sustainable path forward. The platform was transitioned into a withdrawal-only mode to allow users to retrieve their remaining funds before its eventual closure.
