Founded in 1994 by British-Cypriot designer Hussein Chalayan, the Chalayan brand is recognized for its intellectual and experimental approach to fashion. Hussein Chalayan, born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1970, moved to England in 1978 and later graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 1993. His graduate collection, which involved burying and exhuming silk garments to explore themes of decay and resurrection, gained immediate attention and was purchased by the influential London boutique, Browns.

The brand, established as Cartesia Ltd. and the Hussein Chalayan ready-to-wear line, quickly became known for its runway shows that are often described as performance art. Chalayan consistently integrates technology, science, and architecture into his designs, exploring narratives around cultural identity, migration, and anthropology. Notable creations include dresses with built-in airplane parts, furniture that transforms into clothing, and garments embedded with LED or laser technology. This innovative approach has earned him the nickname "the engineer" in the industry.

The business model centers on ready-to-wear collections for both men and women, which are sold alongside more conceptual showpieces. While the avant-garde pieces generate significant media attention, they are complemented by commercially viable and wearable garments. The brand operates through its flagship store and sells its collections in high-end retailers. Over the years, Chalayan has engaged in numerous collaborations, including designing for Puma, where he also served as Creative Director, TSE, and Vionnet, as well as creating pieces for artists like Björk and Lady Gaga. Despite facing financial difficulties, including a temporary liquidation in the early 2000s, the brand has maintained its influence and was successfully relaunched.
