Celsius Corporation, originally founded in 1977 as Swedyards, was created to restructure and eventually divest Sweden’s struggling shipyard industry. Over time, the company transitioned from shipbuilding into the broader defense and arms manufacturing sectors. This transformation was formalized with its rebranding to Celsius AB in 1987.
Celsius inherited and managed major state-owned naval assets, including the Kockums shipyard, a key player in Swedish submarine and naval vessel production. This positioned the company as a central figure in Sweden’s maritime defense infrastructure.
In the 1990s, Celsius expanded aggressively through acquisitions. It absorbed FFV (Försvarets Fabriksverk), bringing in companies like Telub, FFV Aerotech, and a stake in Swedish Ordnance. These were consolidated under the historic Bofors name, strengthening Celsius’s role in land-based armaments. Additionally, the formation of CelsiusTech AB—merging NobelTech Systems and NobelTech Electronics—solidified the company’s foothold in defense electronics and systems integration.
Originally government-controlled, Celsius began its privatization in 1993 when it was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. By 1999, the Swedish government had fully divested its stake, and Saab AB acquired Celsius, integrating its operations into a larger Nordic defense enterprise.
