In 1989, Pierre Potet founded Cedip Infrared Systems in Croissy-Beaubourg, France, establishing a company that would become a key player in high-performance thermal imaging. Cedip specialized in creating sophisticated infrared cameras, detectors, and software for a range of demanding sectors including research and development, defense, and industrial applications. The company developed a reputation for quality and innovation, building out a product line that served a global customer base. The company's trajectory took a significant turn in September 2007 when FLIR Systems, a major US-based competitor, announced its intent to acquire a controlling interest in the French firm. The deal was strategic for FLIR, aiming to expand its international distribution, gain a crucial European manufacturing and technology base, and incorporate Cedip's cooled mid-wave infrared camera technology into its portfolio. For the year ending December 31, 2006, Cedip had reported revenues of €18.2 million. The acquisition was finalized in January 2009. FLIR integrated Cedip’s camera operations into its Thermography Division, while Cedip's Swedish subsidiary, Polytech, which specialized in stabilized gimbal systems, was absorbed into FLIR's Government Systems Division. The original Cedip development center near Paris was designated to continue as a "center of excellence" for high-end camera systems within the larger FLIR organization, marking the end of Cedip's journey as an independent company and its absorption into a global industry leader.
