CCBR-SYNARC was formed through the merger of two specialized clinical services providers. The Center for Clinical and Basic Research (CCBR), founded in Denmark in 1992 by Dr. Claus Christiansen, focused on clinical research, particularly in osteoporosis and women's health, and operated a global network of patient recruitment centers. SYNARC, founded in 1998, was a US-based provider of centralized medical imaging and molecular marker services for pharmaceutical and biotech clinical trials. Dr. Christiansen was also a co-founder of SYNARC. In July 2006, SYNARC acquired CCBR, which then operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary.
In March 2014, CCBR-SYNARC merged with BioClinica, Inc., a provider of medical imaging management solutions and eClinical software. This merger, orchestrated by private equity firms Water Street Healthcare Partners and JLL Partners, created a leading global provider of outsourced clinical trial services. The combined entity offered a comprehensive suite of services, including medical imaging analysis, patient recruitment through a network of research centers, cardiac safety monitoring, central lab services, and clinical trial management software. The business model focused on providing specialized services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to help manage the complexity, reduce costs, and shorten the timeline of drug development.
The merged company initially operated under the BioClinica name. In 2021, following another merger with ERT (eResearch Technology), the combined company was rebranded as Clario. Clario continues to provide these endpoint technology and clinical trial services to the biopharmaceutical industry.
