Carebell is a digital life care service for seniors, operated by its parent company, Zeroweb. It focuses on elderly individuals living alone, providing a sense of security to both the seniors and their families. The service utilizes non-contact, unobtrusive IoT sensors installed in the user's home to monitor movement and daily activities without the need for wearable devices. This system collects and analyzes activity data, such as movement patterns and sleep, to detect anomalies or signs of distress in real-time. If an unusual situation is detected, alerts are sent to family members and an emergency response center.
Carebell was founded by CEO Jaehyun Lee of Zeroweb. Zeroweb, established in 2012, initially focused on customer data analysis for small businesses using indoor positioning technology. Facing challenges due to policy changes by smartphone manufacturers, the company pivoted its business model in 2019 to address the social issue of solitary deaths among the elderly, leveraging its core technology. This shift was motivated by the growing social problems faced by the elderly in a rapidly aging society, such as isolation and depression. The company's goal is to provide a solution that addresses the accessibility and digital divide issues that hampered previous attempts by others.
The business model operates on a monthly subscription basis, with installation and sensor costs often provided for free. Carebell targets individual customers, local governments, and corporate clients through ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) programs, where companies can offer the service as a welfare benefit for the parents of retired or current employees. The service has demonstrated significant success, achieving 'zero solitary deaths' in a pilot program with Busan City and earning a commendation from the Minister of Science and ICT. Beyond physical safety, Carebell aims to provide emotional support, with plans to incorporate technology that can assess a user's psychological state and detect early signs of cognitive decline through conversational AI.
