Camouflage Software Inc. was a specialized cybersecurity company recognized as a pioneer in data masking. Its core business involved providing software that discovers and de-identifies sensitive information in non-production databases used for development, testing, training, and analytics. The technology replaces personally identifiable information (PII) and other critical data with fictional, yet realistic and contextually accurate, values. This process ensures that the masked data remains fully functional and maintains referential integrity, allowing business processes to operate normally without exposing actual sensitive data.
The company's genesis dates back to 2001 when it was called in to assist the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with testing a PeopleSoft application, which required creating a non-sensitive but usable version of their internal database. Based in St. John's, Newfoundland, the company developed solutions supporting a wide array of enterprise databases. Camouflage's offerings catered to industries with high-security needs like finance, insurance, healthcare, and government, helping them mitigate breach risks and comply with regulations such as HIPAA, PCI DSS, and GDPR.
In May 2016, Imperva, a major cybersecurity firm, entered into a technology alliance to sell and support the Camouflage solution under the name Imperva Camouflage Data Masking. This partnership evolved into a full acquisition, with Imperva purchasing the assets of Camouflage Software and hiring most of its employees in February 2017. The acquisition integrated Camouflage's data masking technology into Imperva's broader data security portfolio, which includes solutions for discovering data assets, monitoring access, and detecting breaches. Kevin Duggan served as President and CEO of Camouflage prior to the acquisition.
