Burrp! was a pioneering Indian food-tech platform, established in 2006 by Deap Ubhi and Anand Jain. The founders, having returned from the US after working for companies like Motorola and AT&T, identified an opportunity in India's burgeoning internet landscape. Drawing inspiration from the American platform Yelp, they created one of the first websites in India dedicated to user-rated reviews and discovery of restaurants, cafes, and bars. The platform operated on an advertising-based revenue model, offering free access to its listings and reviews for users.
The company initially focused on the Mumbai and Bengaluru markets, gaining significant market share by 2009. This early success led to its acquisition in 2009 by Infomedia18, a subsidiary of the Network18 group, for ₹4.5 crore (approximately $1 million at the time). Following the acquisition and their lock-in period, the original founders departed to pursue other ventures, with their alumni network being dubbed the 'Burrp mafia' for the numerous successful internet companies they went on to create, such as CleverTap and WebEngage. Anand Jain, for instance, co-founded the successful SaaS company CleverTap.
Under new ownership, Burrp! faced a series of challenges, including multiple changes in top-level management and increased competition from rivals like Zomato. A critical misstep was charging restaurants for listings, a model that Zomato offered for free, leading to an exodus of establishments from the platform. Despite a relaunch in 2015 following Network18's acquisition by Reliance Industries, Burrp! struggled to regain its former prominence. In July 2017, the platform was acquired by the online ticket booking portal BookMyShow in an all-cash deal for a slump sale price of ₹6.7 lakhs. The intention was to integrate Burrp's food discovery capabilities with BookMyShow's entertainment offerings.
