In 1987, James Kocis founded Burgiss with a mission to bring clarity to the opaque world of private capital investing. The company started by providing solutions for private market investors, focusing on portfolio management and reporting. The core of the business was to deliver data and analytics that would help investment teams make better decisions for these complex, non-public assets. The company developed a suite of cloud-based tools, including its flagship 'Private i' platform, to help clients monitor their portfolios, measure performance, and analyze risk. For years, Burgiss grew steadily, establishing itself as a key data provider for institutional investors dealing with private equity, real estate, and other alternative investments. A significant chapter began in January 2020, when financial data giant MSCI made a strategic minority investment in the company. This partnership set the stage for a much larger event. In August 2023, MSCI announced it would acquire the remaining 66% of Burgiss for $697 million, bringing its total investment to $913 million. The acquisition marked a transformational moment, combining Burgiss's deep private asset dataset with MSCI's public market expertise. Today, the integrated company aims to provide a total portfolio view, allowing investors to analyze both public and private assets together.
