Bullring & Grand Central is a major retail and leisure destination located in the centre of Birmingham, UK. The site's history as a market area dates back to the Middle Ages, with a market charter granted in 1166. The current Bullring shopping centre opened in September 2003 after a significant redevelopment, replacing a 1960s complex. Grand Central was redeveloped from the former Pallasades shopping centre and opened in September 2015, integrated with Birmingham New Street Station. Together, they form the UK's largest city-centre-based shopping area, connected by a pedestrian overpass.
As of July 2025, the property group Hammerson acquired the remaining 50% stake from CPP Investments, taking full ownership of the combined entity. The business operates as a landlord, generating revenue from leasing space to over 240 retail stores, restaurants, and leisure operators. The destination serves a wide range of consumers, offering everything from high-end brands like Rolex and Selfridges to high-street favourites such as Zara and Next. In 2024, the Bullring recorded 33 million visitors. The complex features prominent department stores, including one of only four Selfridges in the UK, known for its iconic disc-clad facade.
Beyond retail, Bullring & Grand Central has established itself as an entertainment and dining hub. It offers a diverse range of food and beverage options, from grab-and-go establishments to fine dining restaurants. The destination also hosts numerous events, including light festivals, pop-up markets, and live entertainment, to enhance the visitor experience. Ownership has plans for further redevelopment, including an office-led mixed-use project called The Drum in the vacant former John Lewis space at Grand Central.
