Building Families for Children is a faith-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and families in Maryland. Founded in 1920, the organization was established on the principle that children thrive best in family environments rather than in orphanages. Headquartered in Columbia, it provides services throughout central Maryland.
The organization's operations are centered on two main service areas: Family Strengthening and Treatment Foster Care. The Family Strengthening services offer early, trauma-informed interventions designed to keep families intact. A key program in this area is Safe Families for Children® (SFFC), which is implemented locally by the organization. SFFC creates a network of volunteer host families who provide temporary homes for children, allowing parents to manage crises without the risk of losing custody. This volunteer network also provides additional support, creating a community safety net for vulnerable families.
The Treatment Foster Care program, known as CHOSEN (Children of Special and Exceptional Need), serves children who have been removed from their homes and require more intensive support than traditional foster care can provide due to trauma. The program utilizes Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®), a trauma-informed, attachment-based model to meet the complex needs of these children. Staff provide training and weekly in-home support to foster parents to help them care for the youth effectively.
As a nonprofit entity, Building Families for Children operates through the support of churches, community partners, donors, foster parents, and volunteers. It collaborates with the state and other community organizations to provide referrals, therapeutic support, and financial resources.
