BTL Group Ltd., founded in 2015 and later renamed Interbit Ltd. in January 2019, was a technology company that developed a proprietary blockchain platform called Interbit. The company was co-founded by Guy Halford-Thompson. Initially based in Vancouver, Canada, with a presence in London, BTL focused on providing enterprise-grade blockchain solutions for various sectors, including financial services and energy.
The company's core product, Interbit, was designed as a next-generation distributed computing platform. Its unique architecture featured multiple linked blockchains, a technology the company patented, which allowed businesses to scale operations and segregate data efficiently while maintaining privacy and security. This "chain joining" technology was a key differentiator, enabling the creation of applications directly on the platform. BTL initially targeted the remittance and trading and settlement markets, partnering with companies like Visa to build prototypes for interbank payment networks. It also explored applications for digital asset management in industries such as energy trading, running pilots with a consortium of European energy firms.
BTL Group achieved a significant milestone in November 2015, becoming the first publicly listed blockchain company on the TSX Venture Exchange under the ticker BTL. The company raised capital through several funding rounds, including a post-IPO round in December 2017, to accelerate the development of the Interbit platform. In January 2019, to better align the corporate identity with its flagship product, BTL Group Ltd. changed its name to Interbit Ltd. and its stock ticker to IBIT. However, BTL Group Ltd. was later acquired by North Peak Resources on June 26, 2020.
