The story of Bourn Hall begins with a breakthrough that changed modern medicine. In 1978, the work of physiologist Robert Edwards, obstetrician Patrick Steptoe, and embryologist Jean Purdy led to the birth of Louise Brown, the world’s first baby conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). This event, a culmination of years of research, was met with both acclaim and controversy. Seizing the momentum, the trio founded Bourn Hall Clinic in 1980, establishing the world's first center dedicated to IVF treatment. They created a place where scientific innovation and patient care could come together, opening the door for countless families. Operating from a historic manor house near Cambridge, the clinic quickly established its reputation. By 1985, 500 babies had been born as a result of their work, a number that doubled to 1,000 by the end of 1987. The clinic continued to pioneer new techniques, including the first use of frozen embryos in 1984. A significant event in the company's journey occurred in January 2021, when Bourn Hall was acquired by the Canadian private equity firm Triangle Capital. The investment was intended to help expand Bourn Hall's capacity and services both in the UK and internationally. The existing management team remained in place to continue the clinic's mission. Today, Bourn Hall operates multiple clinics across the UK, continuing the legacy of its founders.
