BoulderHouse operates indoor bouldering facilities in British Columbia, with locations in Victoria and Langford. The company was co-founded by local climber Robert Somogyi and Jean-Marc de la Plante, who owns the gym development company UPLIFY Climbing. De la Plante has been involved in the establishment of several other Canadian climbing gyms, including Allez-Up in Montreal and Joe Rockhead's in Toronto. The first BoulderHouse location opened in Victoria in 2016, followed by a larger, 13,500-square-foot facility in Langford that opened in June 2021.
The business provides rope-free climbing on short walls, with services catering to a wide demographic, from beginners to experienced climbers, as well as families and children. The gyms feature bouldering circuits of varying difficulty, which are updated weekly to offer new challenges. The Langford location, a $3 million project developed in partnership with the City of Langford, includes a 150-linear-foot main wall, a dedicated training area, and a 6,000-square-foot kids' area called the "TreeHouse". This dedicated youth area was a key feature for the founders, who are both climbers with families.
The business model relies on revenue from memberships, punch passes, and day passes, which provide access to either or both facilities. They also offer instructional courses like "Bouldering 101," host events and competitions, and facilitate group bookings for parties and schools. By creating a strong community aspect and partnering with municipalities, BoulderHouse aims to be a central hub for local climbers and introduce the sport to a broader audience.
