Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a private, not-for-profit, 514-bed academic medical center located in Boston's historic South End. Its current structure resulted from the 1996 merger of Boston City Hospital (BCH), the first municipal hospital in the United States, and Boston University Medical Center Hospital (BUMCH). The merger, championed by then-Mayor Thomas Menino, was a response to significant financial pressures facing Boston City Hospital. This strategic consolidation created New England's largest safety-net hospital, continuing the original mission of BCH from 1864 to provide accessible healthcare to all, particularly the city's most vulnerable residents.
As the principal teaching affiliate for the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, BMC plays a crucial role in training future healthcare professionals, operating 67 residency programs. The institution is a major center for biomedical research, receiving over $110 million in sponsored research funding in 2024, with hundreds of projects in areas like infectious disease, substance use disorder, and oncology. The hospital's business model is that of a non-profit organization. A substantial portion of its revenue, 81%, comes from governmental payers like Medicare and Medicaid, reflecting its service to a large number of low-income and elderly patients. The remainder is generated from providing medical services and through grants and donations.
BMC provides comprehensive care across more than 70 specialties and subspecialties, including being the largest and busiest trauma and emergency services center in New England. Key clinical areas that have received national recognition include geriatrics, neurology, neurosurgery, and urology. The hospital distinguishes itself by addressing the social determinants of health that impact its community. This includes pioneering programs like a hospital-based food pantry, a teaching kitchen, and significant investments in supportive housing to combat health inequities. In 2021, BMC launched the Health Equity Accelerator to systematically address racial health disparities across several clinical areas. The center is also a founding partner of Boston HealthNet, a network of community health centers that expands its reach into local neighborhoods.
