Booxmedia, established in Helsinki, Finland, in 2009, specialized in cloud-based video management solutions before its acquisition. The company operated on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, providing a platform that enabled TV providers and operators to launch "TV everywhere" services without needing to build their own technology infrastructure from the ground up. This business model targeted mobile operators, OTT service providers, media companies, and broadcasters. The core of Booxmedia's business was a comprehensive product suite that managed media capture, encoding, transcoding, storage, and delivery.
The company's service allowed for the deployment of "TV as an app" on iOS, Android, and Windows mobile devices, as well as on any browser-enabled device such as smart TVs and game consoles. Key features of the platform included HD quality live TV streaming, access to catch-up TV, video on demand, and cloud-based recording. A notable capability was the 'follow-me' functionality, which permitted users to start watching content on one device and seamlessly continue on another. One of its major clients was the Finnish operator DNA, which utilized Booxmedia's platform for its own "TV everywhere" service for smartphones and tablets.
In March 2014, Booxmedia secured $626,000 in a seed funding round with participation from Alma Media and DNA. A significant milestone occurred on May 20, 2015, when the UK-based IPTV provider Amino Technologies acquired Booxmedia for an initial sum of €7.9 million ($8.87M). This acquisition was a strategic move for Amino to integrate a proven, scalable cloud-based platform into its offerings and address the growing market for mobile and OTT services. At the time of the acquisition, Jukka Sintonen served as the CEO of Booxmedia. Post-acquisition, Booxmedia was expected to continue operating as an independent company, and its R&D activities in Finland were planned to be expanded.
