Blue Willow Systems, established in 2014, developed a resident safety platform tailored for senior living communities. The company was founded by Vikram Devdas, a computer engineer who was personally motivated to enter the senior care technology space after his father experienced an undetected fall. This event drove him to address the technological gaps in monitoring the well-being of seniors in care facilities.
The firm operated on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business model, providing its platform to senior care facilities in the US and Canada. This subscription-based service was designed to be a budget-friendly option for its clients. Blue Willow Systems' core offering was an end-to-end safety platform that integrated wearable and non-wearable sensors to monitor residents. Key features included automatic fall detection, real-time location tracking for residents and staff, and personalized wander management. The system utilized a wearable wristband, programmed with artificial intelligence, to differentiate between a fall and regular movement. Data from these devices was sent to a cloud-based platform, BlueCloud, which allowed caregivers and operators to monitor residents via mobile and desktop dashboards, receive real-time alerts, and analyze trends.
In June 2016, the company secured $2.3M in a seed funding round with investors including Big Basin Partners and Stanford Angels and Entrepreneurs. A significant milestone was the acquisition of Blue Willow Systems by Royal Philips on August 13, 2018. The acquisition was intended to complement Philips' existing CarePoint 6.0 senior living platform, enhancing it with cloud-based management solutions, Bluetooth-enabled wearables, and advanced reporting capabilities.
