More about EDF Energy
Edit

EDF Energy is a British integrated energy company, wholly owned by the French state-owned EDF (Électricité de France), with operations spanning electricity generation and the sale of natural gas and electricity to homes and businesses throughout the United Kingdom. It employs 11,717 people, and handles 5.22 million business and residential customer accounts.

The company was formed in January 2002, following the acquisition and mergers of several regional electricity companies and power stations. In 2009, EDF took control of British Energy, making it one of the largest generators in the United Kingdom.

EDF Energy's portfolio includes eight nuclear power stations, totaling nearly 9,000 MW of installed capacity. The company also owns and operates 37 wind farms, develops solar projects, and previously operated coal-fired power stations. As of March 2023, EDF's last coal-fired power station, West Burton A, ceased operations.

EDF Energy has been actively expanding its capabilities in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. In 2019, the company acquired Pivot Power, a British start-up specializing in battery storage and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. In 2020, EDF acquired a majority stake in Pod Point, one of the largest electric vehicle charging companies in the UK.

The company has also been involved in developing new nuclear projects, including plans for new EPR design reactors at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. EDF plans to build and operate these new plants through its subsidiary NNB Generation Company (NNB GenCo).

EDF Energy's main offices are located in London, Exeter, Sunderland, Hove, and Barnwood in Gloucester.
