The company's core product functioned like a prepaid digital wallet. Consumers would create a BitPass account and load funds using traditional methods like a credit card or PayPal. This stored balance could then be used to make seamless, low-value purchases across any website or digital platform that integrated the BitPass system. This model circumvented the high transaction fees associated with credit cards for small amounts, which was a significant barrier for content creators. For merchants, BitPass charged a percentage-based fee; for instance, its Professional merchant account had a 15% charge on transactions under $5, with the fee being paid by the content provider.
BitPass secured significant venture capital, raising an initial $1.5 million in 2002, followed by a larger Series B round of $11.75 million in 2004, bringing its total funding to over $13 million. The company forged strategic partnerships with major corporations including Microsoft, Disney, PayPal, and the Royal Bank of Scotland. A notable initiative was the creation of Mperia in 2003, an online music store for independent artists to sell their work directly to consumers using the BitPass payment system. In a move to expand its capabilities, BitPass acquired its competitor, Yaga Inc., in early 2006, absorbing its technology for subscription and payment-aggregation models. Despite these efforts and its established client base, BitPass announced its closure in January 2007. The shutdown was attributed primarily to intensified competition from new, free payment platforms like Google Checkout.
