In the 1970s, a movement of engaged consumers across France began forming buying groups to source organic products directly. This grassroots effort evolved into commercial cooperatives in the 1980s. The pivotal moment came in 1986 when these groups, including pioneers like Intercoop and Biopaïs, united to create the Biocoop association, starting with an existing network of 40 stores. The founders were not specific individuals but a collective of consumer and producer cooperatives driven by a shared goal: to champion organic farming and consumption. The organization's structure was formalized in 1993 with a charter that defined collective rules for product selection, business management, and social standards. This wasn't a typical growth story focused on profit. Instead, Biocoop established a unique cooperative model. A significant turning point occurred in 2002 when Biocoop transitioned from an association to a cooperative public limited company (SA), making its members shareholders and solidifying their shared commitment. This structural change enabled further development. In 2005, Biocoop merged its logistics platforms to create a more efficient economic tool and began centralizing its supply chain. Unlike a venture-backed startup, Biocoop’s journey is marked by a deliberate, mission-driven expansion, maintaining its core values of equity and cooperation while becoming the leading organic retailer in France.
