In the world of industrial hygiene and environmental science, some companies become foundational. BGI, Inc. was one of those. Founded by Robert Gussman, BGI established itself over a 42-year history as a leader in aerosol sciences. The company developed and manufactured equipment used for particulate air sampling. These tools were critical for assessing worker exposure in various industries and for studying environmental air pollution. In fact, BGI's particle samplers were among the first on the market and were recognized early on as 'reference' samplers by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The company’s journey took a significant turn in April 2014. Mesa Laboratories, a company specializing in quality control solutions, announced it was acquiring BGI. The deal was valued at $9.9 million in cash. For Mesa Labs, this was a strategic move. The acquisition was synergistic with Mesa's existing Bios line of gas flow calibrators, which are widely used to calibrate air samplers like those BGI produced. By bringing BGI into the fold, Mesa could offer a more complete solution to its customers and worldwide distributors, merging BGI's pioneering work in flow measurement with Mesa's primary standards approach.
