In 1975, in the heart of Angers, France, Gilbert Benoit transitioned from baker to chocolatier, founding Benoit Chocolats. The business was a family affair from the start, with chocolates being crafted on the first floor of their shop-workshop. Success came quickly, establishing the brand's reputation for artisanal quality. The story took a significant turn when the next generation stepped in. In 1997, Gilbert's daughter, Anne Benoit, joined as head chocolatier, continuing the family's legacy. Her sister, Véronique, expanded the company's footprint by opening a store in Paris in 2009. To keep up with growing demand, a dedicated production laboratory was established in Les Ponts-de-Cé. A key creation for the company was the Caramandes®, a thin triangle of caramelized almonds and salted butter covered in chocolate, developed by Anne. This signature product helped the company gain international recognition, particularly in Japan. In May 2023, the family-run business entered a new chapter through an acquisition. Notus Technologies, an investment firm, acquired a majority stake in Benoit Chocolats, adding it to a portfolio that includes other premium food brands. This move aims to foster growth and expand the reach of the historic chocolatier, while preserving its artisanal know-how.
