BazarChic is a French e-commerce company specializing in online private event sales for premium brands. It was founded in 2006 by the husband-and-wife team, Liberty Verny and Nathalie Gillier. Verny was an entrepreneur who had previously built and sold a large IT services company, while Gillier had a background in stock purchasing and distribution. Their combined expertise allowed them to establish BazarChic with a positioning focused on a premium and trendy selection to differentiate from competitors.
The company's business model is based on offering daily event-driven sales of high-end products from major brands at significant discounts, often up to 70% off retail prices. The core product categories include fashion for women, men, and children, as well as home goods, wine, and fine foods. This model serves as a channel for brands to clear excess inventory while connecting with BazarChic's large member base. Initially requiring membership, the site opened to all shoppers in 2023.
Over the years, BazarChic secured investments, notably from the Figaro group in 2007. A major milestone occurred in 2016 when the Galeries Lafayette group acquired BazarChic to enhance its own omnichannel and digital destocking capabilities. This acquisition included subsidiaries like MyTravelChic (a travel-focused offshoot that was later discontinued) and NGR, physical destocking spaces. Following the acquisition, Verny initially remained as head of the company, with Elisabeth Cazorla taking over as CEO in 2019. By 2020, the company reached a turnover of €80 million. However, facing intense competition from market leaders like Veepee and Showroomprivé, the rise of the second-hand market, and accumulating losses, the Galeries Lafayette group initiated a process for the cessation of BazarChic's activities in late 2024, threatening its continued operation unless a buyer could be found.
