BackupAgent, founded in 2005 by Robbert van Geldrop, Roland Sars, and Gijs van der Hulst, was a Dutch software company specializing in cloud-based backup solutions. The company provided software to web hosting companies, internet service providers, and managed service providers, which they could then offer as a white-labeled service to their end-users. The platform enabled the backup of data from desktops, servers, and business applications to the cloud.
The founders, who were also behind the managed hosting provider TransIP, identified a need for a scalable and reliable online backup solution. In 2010, the company secured a significant investment to accelerate its growth and expand its market reach. BackupAgent's business model was based on licensing its software to service providers, who would then pay fees based on the number of users or the amount of storage consumed.
In a significant milestone, BackupAgent was acquired by Acronis, a global leader in data protection, in 2014. This acquisition was aimed at strengthening Acronis's cloud backup offerings and expanding its network of service providers. The founders have since moved on to other ventures.
