Azuqua operated as a cloud-based integration and workflow automation company, founded in Seattle, Washington, in 2011 by Nikhil Hasija and Craig Unger. Both founders brought extensive experience from Microsoft; Unger was involved with creating Microsoft Excel's Pivot Tables and led the Microsoft Dynamics CRM business, while Hasija held senior product and program management roles in the same division. Their collective background in enterprise software and data management directly informed Azuqua's mission to simplify the connectivity between disparate cloud services.
The company developed a platform that allowed businesses to connect various SaaS applications and automate workflows without writing code. This was achieved through a visual drag-and-drop designer, a library of pre-built connectors to popular services like HubSpot and Trello, and logic functions for data processing. The service targeted a clear need in the market, as businesses increasingly adopted numerous cloud apps and struggled to make them interoperate efficiently. Azuqua's business model was based on the number of processes or 'FLOws' a customer connected, serving clients ranging from startups to large enterprises such as General Electric and Airbnb.
The company's journey included participation in the Techstars Microsoft Azure Accelerator in 2013, which helped it gain early traction. Azuqua secured a total of $16 million in funding across multiple rounds, including a Series A led by Ignition Partners and a Series B led by Insight Venture Partners. In March 2019, the identity management firm Okta acquired Azuqua for approximately $52.5 million. The acquisition was primarily a technology-focused purchase, aimed at integrating Azuqua's no-code workflow automation capabilities into Okta's Lifecycle Management products to better manage user identity across a multitude of applications. Following the acquisition, the Azuqua platform was integrated into Okta Workflows and is no longer available as a standalone product.
