Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras S.A. is a publicly traded airline operating as one of the largest air carriers in Brazil. The company's strategic focus is to stimulate demand by providing frequent and affordable flights to underserved markets across the country, connecting smaller cities and regional centers. Revenue is primarily generated from passenger ticket sales, complemented by ancillary services and a growing cargo division, Azul Cargo, which utilizes belly space in its passenger network and dedicated freighter aircraft.
The airline was founded by David Neeleman, a Brazilian-American serial entrepreneur with a significant track record in the aviation industry, having previously launched Morris Air, WestJet, and JetBlue Airways. Born in Brazil, Neeleman spent his formative years in the U.S. but maintained a strong connection to his birth country, where he also served as a missionary in his youth. His extensive experience, including pioneering electronic ticketing at Morris Air and building JetBlue into a major U.S. carrier, shaped his vision for Azul. Neeleman established Azul on May 5, 2008, with approximately $200 million in initial capital, and the airline commenced commercial operations on December 15, 2008. Its name, meaning "Blue" in Portuguese, was chosen through a public contest to engage its future customer base.
Azul quickly expanded its footprint, establishing hubs in Campinas, Belo Horizonte, and Recife. A pivotal moment in its history was the 2012 merger agreement with TRIP Linhas Aéreas, then Brazil's largest regional carrier, which significantly broadened its domestic network upon finalization in 2014. The airline launched its first international routes in 2014 to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. Subsequent growth has been supported by strategic investments from entities like United Airlines and the HNA Group in 2015 and a successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) on both the São Paulo and New York Stock Exchanges in April 2017, which raised approximately $2 billion. Azul's network now serves over 150 destinations throughout Brazil and internationally in the Americas and Europe. The airline operates a diverse fleet tailored to its route structure, including Airbus A320neo family jets for high-density routes, Airbus A330s for long-haul international flights, Embraer E-Jets for regional operations, and ATR turboprops for short-haul flights to smaller cities.
