HEG Limited, a key entity within the LNJ Bhilwara Group, operates as a prominent manufacturer and exporter of graphite electrodes. Established in October 1972 and formerly known as Hindustan Electro-Graphites Ltd, the company began its journey as an electrode importer before shifting to production. This transition was supported by financial and technical collaboration with Societe Des Electrodes Et Refractaires Savoie (SERS), a subsidiary of France's Pechiney. HEG operates what is considered the world's largest single-site integrated graphite electrodes plant, located in Mandideep, Madhya Pradesh, India.
The company's business model is centered on the production and sale of high-power (HP) and ultra-high power (UHP) graphite electrodes. These products are critical consumables for the steel industry, specifically for electric arc furnaces (EAF) used in steel manufacturing. Revenue is primarily generated from the sale of these electrodes, with the graphite business accounting for a significant majority of its income. HEG serves a global clientele, exporting over 70% of its production to more than 30 countries. Its customer base includes major steel manufacturers such as ArcelorMittal, POSCO, and Thyssenkrupp.
Beyond graphite electrodes, HEG has diversified its operations into power generation, managing captive power plants with a capacity of approximately 77 MW to support its energy-intensive manufacturing processes. The company also produces other specialty carbon and graphite products, including carbon blocks and fine-grain carbon items for various industrial applications. More recently, through its subsidiary TACC Ltd., HEG has ventured into the advanced materials sector, signing an MoU to establish a graphene manufacturing facility in India. This vertical integration, controlling the value chain from raw material sourcing to distribution, allows for greater control over costs and quality.
