Aurea Technologies Inc. is a Canadian company that develops and manufactures portable renewable energy products. Founded in 2017 by CEO Cat Adalay, an entrepreneur with a background in mechanical engineering and product design, and later joined by Co-Founder and Chief Revenue Officer Rachel Carr, the company is headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The founders, both outdoor enthusiasts, initially explored wind energy systems for residential applications before seeing an opportunity to scale down the technology for personal use.
The company's flagship product is the Shine Turbine, a portable wind turbine designed to charge handheld electronic devices for off-grid consumers and as an emergency power backup. The 40-watt turbine is collapsible to the size of a water bottle, weighs approximately three pounds (1.3kg), and can be set up in about two minutes. It is engineered to operate in various weather conditions, day or night, generating power in wind speeds from 8 to 28 mph (13-45 kph). The device features an integrated 12,000 mAh battery to store energy, allowing it to function as a power bank, and incorporates an MPPT controller to maximize power conversion from the wind. Aurea distinguishes the Shine Turbine from portable solar panels by highlighting its higher power-to-weight ratio and its ability to generate power in a wider range of conditions, including at night and on cloudy days.
Aurea's business model combines direct-to-consumer sales through its website with crowdfunding campaigns to finance production and validate market demand. The initial Kickstarter campaign for the Shine Turbine launched in June 2021, meeting its funding goal within an hour and selling out its first production run in five days. A subsequent campaign for the updated Shine 2.0 also significantly surpassed its funding goal. The company targets outdoor adventurers, including campers, hikers, and RV users, as well as individuals seeking emergency preparedness solutions. In addition to its consumer-focused Shine Turbine, Aurea is developing the RISE Turbine, a tactical wind turbine designed for military operations. The company has received funding from various sources, including a seed round in 2018, grants from organizations like Sustainable Development Technology Canada, and investments from groups such as the Women's Equity Lab Atlantic angel fund.
