The story of Athenix is a tale of two distinct companies sharing one name. The first Athenix was founded in 2001 in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park. This company was a player in the agricultural biotechnology space, developing technologies to create insect-resistant crops. They built an extensive microbial gene collection to develop traits for major crops like corn and soybeans. After raising over $43 million from investors including Boston Millennia Partners and Hunt BioVentures, the playbook culminated in a significant exit. In November 2009, global giant Bayer CropScience acquired Athenix for approximately $400 million. The acquisition was a strategic move for Bayer to bolster its position in the crop science market and expand its biotech capabilities in North America. Then, a new story begins. In 2010, a different Athenix was founded in California by CEO James Haefner. This Athenix operates in an entirely different world: aesthetic plastic surgery. With a background at companies like Allergan, Haefner saw an opportunity to create a more consistent, retail-focused approach to cosmetic procedures. The company provides a full suite of surgical and non-surgical treatments, from body sculpting to laser treatments. Backed by private equity firms like Latticework Capital Management, this Athenix has been executing a growth-by-acquisition strategy. A key event was the 2022 acquisition of Marina Plastic Surgery, a prominent center in Los Angeles, signaling an aggressive expansion plan to build a national brand in the aesthetic medicine space.
